I am a particularly fussy hotel guest and diner. so I was a bit unsure of what to expect for a hotel in rural Galway that I had never heard of (I grew up close to Athenry) but from the moment I walked through the door, I was pleasantly surprised and very impressed. The staff on reception were beyond lovely and helpful on a morning that was probably quite stressful behind the scenes (there was no water due to a broken pipe). One receptionist, in particular, was so kind, helping me with flowers I had delivered for my mother, etc. We had lunch in the bar (which is beautiful and very comfortable) and again the service was outstanding. We were checked on several times by staff and made to feel that we were really being looking after. We also had dinner in the resturant. I was a bit concerned about the standard of the food after reading one or two reviews on Tripadvisor but I think those reviewers must have been eating in a different restaurant! The meal was one of the best I have ever had in a hotel restaurant and the lamb was 5* standard. I have very high standards for food and service in restaurants and I think this was one of the best meals I have had in at least 6 months - and for a ridiculously reasonable price! The room was comfortable, clean and absolutely perfect (although noise from either downstairs or another room was quite loud and disturbed us a bit - we were in room 120). We loved the luxurious carpet. The entire time we were there we saw staff cleaning constantly - a staff member at the pool was picking up hairs and tiny bits of rubbish with her bare hands. I felt sorry for her but I was amazed by the level of attention to detail. It's a sign of an overly strict manager or a very motivated dedicated team. I hope it's the latter. The only criticism I had was of the spa. To be clear, the staff were amazing (!!!) and we were very happy with our treatments but we felt that the layout and style of the spa and leisure center let the hotel down a bit. The leisure center is very much targeted at local people (which is fine) and it felt more like a gym with an add-on beauty salon rather than a spa. We left feeling that we didn't really have a proper spa experience (we booked a spa package). The entrance to the gym splits the beauty salon in two and the pool is on a sperate floor. This removed any opportunity for relaxing in bathrobes and slippers. We had to ask for robes and there were no slippers available (the girls were great and improvised, giving us what, I think, we're the slippers they use for fake tanning). There is no relaxation area for post-massage so after our treatments, we had to get back into our jeans and boots then changed again 5 minutes later when we went to use the pool and jacuzzi. These small details really took away from the overall experience for us. We were also surprised by the sheer volume of kids in the pool, when we were expecting a relaxing spa experience. We didn't really mind because the rest of the experience was so lovely but it did take away from the experience a little. I completely respect that the pool should also be for local people too but it could be nice to section off part of the pool as adults only (not just a section for lane swimmers). Overall we were hugely impressed by the hotel, the staff, the service and the food. I was saying all weekend that I was blown away by how nice it is and I would 100% come back and stay again. The staff are an absolute credit to the hotel. If I were to change anything I would make some tweaks to the "spa experience" so it feels a bit more joined-up rather than simply attending a beauty salon and having a swim afterwards. Maybe moving the reception so guests are more contained in the relaxing vibes of the beauty salon area rather than bumping into local gym-goers in their dressing gowns. If this is not possible it could be good to provide a little more clarity on the website about what to expect e.g the pool being used for swimming lessons etc. We will 100% be back! Thank you.
